Court time in Dubai is booked ahead and paid for whether you turn up or not. So two things happen constantly across the city. Someone has a padel court at seven on Thursday and something has come up, and they are about to eat the cost. Someone else wants to play on Thursday and every court is already gone.

Those two people should find each other. Court slots on Lineup is how they do.

Selling a slot you can't use

If you have booked a court or a pitch and you cannot make it, you list the slot. You set the venue, the time and the price, and it appears to players looking for court time in that area. When someone takes it, the booking is theirs. Instead of losing what you paid, you get it back from the player who is glad to have it.

You keep control of your own listings. You can relist a slot, take it down, or delete it, and once it has sold it moves out of the way so you are not managing it any more.

Buying court time that's going spare

On the other side, if you want to play and everything is booked, the slots other players are giving up are often the only court time left. You see the venue, the time and the price up front, take the one that suits you, and the booking passes to you. It is court time that would otherwise have sat empty.

How the money works

We want to be plain about this, because a marketplace that is vague about money is not one you should trust.

If the seller has in-app payments switched on, you pay for the slot through Lineup by card. The seller receives 97 percent and Lineup keeps a 3 percent platform fee. That fee is the whole of what Lineup makes on a slot. There are no listing charges and nothing added on top of the price you see.

If the seller has not switched on in-app payments, the slot is reserved for you and the two of you arrange payment directly between yourselves. In that case Lineup is introducing you, not handling the money, and you should agree how you are paying before the booking changes hands.

What Lineup does and does not do here

It does connect a player who cannot use a booking with one who wants it, and it handles the card payment when the seller has that turned on.

It does not book courts for you, set venue prices, or operate any venue. The booking is always between a player and their venue. Lineup only lets that booking be passed on.

It does not guarantee a slot against the venue. The court, the time and the terms are the venue's, exactly as the original booker agreed them.
